ARCHIVE: 2009 - KASHGAR 2
October
Now just a pocket of land surrounded by the high-rise buildings of Kashgar, the Old City in Xinjiang, China, home to 13,000 Uyghur families, is being razed by the Chinese government in the name of modernization and safety and is destined to disappear within the next several years.
As I wander the labyrinth of Old City alleys at night, I often cannot see the ground. The exposures are long as there are few streets lights; mostly light pollution from infrastructure surrounding the Old City. The Uyghur’s and I often pass each other unnoticed, like ghosts in a city soon to be gone.
